VoXX's repertoire for this concert covered a broad spectrum. Medieval and Renaissance works contrasted with more modern pieces, and styles range from chant through polyphony to contemporary.

OLD and NEW
Musike for the Newe Yeare 2011

Voxx presented a selection of favorite works in a program designed to celebrate both the group’s new name and the turning of the new year. As is usual for the group’s January concert series, VoXX's repertoire will cover a broad spectrum, from medieval times through the 20th century and from chant and polyphony through chromaticism.

In an example of “favorites old and new,” two very different settings of a Marian text will be presented. One is the majestic four-part “Ave Maria Virgo Serena,” written by Josquin. The piece will be sung by the full group, in contrast with the other “Ave Maria” on the program, a contemporary setting by Gustav Holst to be sung by the women of VoXX.

Summer 2009 Concert Serie: SAINTS and SINNERS

Voice of Twenty has built a reputation for specializing in a wide range of early music, and this program will be no exception. As the backbone of this summer’s program, titled “Saints & Sinners,” the group will sing the five movements of the Ordinary of the Mass. The twist will be that each movement will be by a composer from a different era, and secular works will be interspersed between them.

The first mass movement, the Kyrie from the medieval “Messe du Jour de Noel,” is thought to be by Leonin; the last is a contemporary setting of the Agnus Dei from the 1921 “Mass in G Minor” by Ralph Vaughan Williams. In between is a Gloria by Josquin, a Credo by Johannes Ciconia (possibly the first performance of this work in the state if not the country), and the Sanctus & Benedictus from Palestrina’s glorious six-part Pope Marcellus Mass.

VoXX has always wanted to tackle an entire mass setting, but also wanted to continue the variety and texture in the concerts that our audiences seem to like. Choosing mass movements from different times by different composers presents varied  program by placing each one within a set of secular pieces that complements it. For example,  the Kyrie is bracketed with two 13th century works: Verbum Patris Humanatur and Amor Potest. Then, near the end of the concert, the contemporary Agnus Dei has been paired with Samuel Barber’s lovely setting of the James Stephens poem “The Coolin,” for a contemporary mini-set.”

The secular repertoire covers pre-medieval times through the twentieth century, and is sung in many languages: English both old (“Ay Robyn”) and new (“The Coolin’”); German (Heinrich Isaac’s sonorous “Innsbruck”); French (the snappy “Revecy Venir du Printens”); Italian (Landini’s lively ode to spring, “Ecco la Primavera”); and, of course, Latin (Gesualdo’s haunting “O Vos Omnes,” among others).
